Summer fun and great fishing!

Well I know it’s been awhile since I’ve updated the blog… to be honest it’s really become a matter of internet availability, time, and writer’s cramp trying how to describe another week of great fishing in a new and exciting fashion. It really has been another great run (lasting now about 5 consecutive weeks) of great fishing. We’ve had families in camp that have adventured and swam, military groups that took advantage of the fantastic 20% military discount we offer in July, hard-core fishermen and couples just looking to get away from the hustle of every day life during the past few weeks. It’s been a great mix of guests, many new folks and lot’s of familiar faces too. After an outstanding spring season of fishing and fun, the summer has continued along the same path. It continues to amaze me how many guests are speaking of released walleye over 18″ with many 20″+ fish in the mix, and it seems with every passing week it only gets better.

On Wabaskang, the walleye have been biting everywhere. The typical mid-lake hump and structure bite was on fire throughout July and into early August, and the ever present “weed-edge” bite has been just as consistent. As it always is here, the minnow bite just can’t be beat. The main forage for walleye here in Wabby, and it continues to hold true. Crawlers have been good, also producing fish. The perch fishing has been excellent as Ron Lorman’s group would attest as they easily took home their 6 man limit of 300 perch and ate a bunch while they were here also. Thanks for the invite to dinner as daughter Allison and I, thoroughly enjoyed the perch fry. Yummy!

As my girls have gotten older it has become increasingly difficult to manage to get them up to camp. College, summer jobs, etc. have certainly made it a challenge so I was fortunate to have a great friend Mark Zeese from back home and his crew that were willing to bring her up for a week early this month. Allison (the most die-hard) of my girls for fishing, laid the ground rules out well in advance. IF I can get the time off work, and I do come up for the week we HAVE to fish a LOT. She made it pretty clear… and fortunately we were able to get some time on the water every day but one while she was here and had a ball catching a lot of walleye and northern in the process. We even made the trek back to Lost Lake where I hadn’t been able to take her in probably 6 years, oh my what fun we had that day! We were there four hours, probably fished for 3 hours and boated 42 walleyes the smallest being about 17″ and I don’t know how many pike. I’m sure we could have stayed and easily caught another 30-40 fish as they were biting great when we decided to call it a day.

Speaking of Lost Lake, wow does it continue to impress. July and August are always great times on Lost and this year has been no exception. It’s just been on fire, with every group reporting great success and good numbers of walleyes with the majority between 18-21″ which is typical there. Complete seclusion, beautiful trail walk and great fishing… what’s not to like about that?

Right now on Wabaskang the bite seems to be good in about every depth of water. One group comes in and says the hammered the ‘eyes on weed edges in 13-15′ of water, the next group says they fished the deeper drops from 16-26’ and caught a bunch there. As I have said for 14 years if you are fishing a spot and not catching fish then move, because there are fish biting SOMEWHERE nearby. It’s gonna be a great finish to the season, weather patterns and water temps are set up nicely to continue this run of excellent fishing. Can’t wait!

Until next time, take care and tight lines. Hope to see you on the water!

Peffley's Wilderness Camp is a family owned and operated camp. Dave has been fishing Wabaskang Lake for over 25 years and was previously a guest of this camp for 12 years prior to purchasing the camp in 2005. I am a proud supporter of our military and offer a nice discount during the month of July to our guests who have also served. I have three daughters ranging in ages from 16-21 who spend much of their summer with us in camp and have totally embraced the wilderness experience we offer. They have for years referred to it as the "best summer experience ever".

While rarely necessary on our lake, because I do have a very good working knowledge on how and where to fish on Wabaskang Lake and our portage waters, I will guide groups if asked to. Otherwise, I am always happy to share information with our guests and provide them well marked lake maps so they can start catching fish their first day in camp.

I pride myself on running a very clean and well managed camp with your satisfaction our top priority. Many guests who have fished from this camp for over 20 years, and several more that have fished here for over 30 years and even some over 40 years.
